It's allegedly several years after the original incident and Heather Donahue's brother James gets a crew to go out with him to the same spot to try to figure out what happened to her. Watching these two phony documentaries together is worse than having all of your wisdom teeth pulled out on the same day, with the camera still ridiculously shaky and the premise unnecessary for a work of fiction. If I never have to hear Blair Witch Project ever again in my life, I will be one happy film connoisseur. Still, there's no question that there are some effective moments scattered throughout the picture and that makes it worth watching. Sometimes less is more and I think this film would have been a tad bit more successful had it gone for that. As it stands, BLAIR WITCH is certainly better than the sequel but falls well short of matching the brilliance of the original. A smarter middle section probably would have made for a much better movie. And without giving anything away, one wishes that the connection to the original film had been explored a tad bit better and with more details.

This here is where the remake side of things shows its head. It really did hit a point where we enter a "been there, done that" feel. I also thought the film hit a wall around the fifty-minute mark and it took until the finale before it picked up again. As I said there are certainly some flaws and one is that at times the soundtrack is way too loud and especially with some of the non-stop screaming. I'd argue that the cast members are good enough for their roles and they're at least a group you don't mind hanging out with as you watch the movie. I thought director Adam Wingard did a very good job at really laying on the creepy factor and as you go through the maze you get more and more caught up knowing something is going to go wrong. The final twenty-minutes is where things really pick up and I must admit that I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. There are a couple good "jump" scares where the camera and turn and someone/thing will be there.

As with most found footage movies, this here works the best when you can lose yourself in what you're seeing on the screen and the movie makes you feel as if you're right there with the characters. For the most part I thought there were enough effective and creepy moments here to make it worth watching. BLAIR WITCH falls just short of being a good movie, which is too bad because there are some pretty effective scenes here. I'm going to argue that for the most part this is more of a remake because the connection to the first film (Heather) is just briefly brought up at the start and the end so the majority of what's in the middle is just a new group of kids being lost in the woods in the dark and with something strange happening. BLAIR WITCH is one of those new films that can work both as a sequel as well as a remake. James packs up with his friends and heads out into the woods to find her but soon they realize that the legend was real. Blair Witch (2016) ** 1/2 (out of 4) James (James Allen McCune) believes that his sister Heather (the girl from the first movie) is still alive after someone posts footage of a video clip from the Blair Woods.
